Introduction to Daventry - City Centre
The small English market town of Daventry lies in Northamptonshire, 124kms north of London, with Rugby its closest city, some 16kms away. Set close to the MI motorway linking London with the Midlands and the north, the historic town is home to 22,000 residents. Recent developments have included many new housing estates, aimed at commuters to Rugby and the county town of Northampton. The town's historic market square holds Daventry City Centre hotels in the form of old pubs and coaching inns, augmented by several more modern motel lodgings on the edge of the town. Regular farmers' markets and a traditional market are held in the High Street, having transferred recently from the market square. Visitors to Daventry will find a spectacular town cross, the Burton Memorial, set in the square amid rows of quaint old homes and shops. Backing the town is Borough Hill, the site of the largest Iron Age fort in the country, which also contains the remains of a Roman settlement.
