Introduction to Dartmouth, England
Dartmouth, in the English county of Devon, is one of the country’s big tourist destinations. The town, located in England’s southwest, sits on the banks of the River Dart estuary and is contained within a region known as the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Dartmouth hotels provide excellent access to this famous area of stunning natural scenery. The community enjoys a rich naval history, being an excellent deep-water port of great strategic importance. Visitors to the area can learn how the Crusaders sailed from the port in 1147 and 1190. Since the time of Edward III, Dartmouth has been home to Britain’s Royal Navy and was even featured in the Canterbury Tales, written by Geoffrey Chaucer, who visited the town in 1373. The town enjoys an outstanding selection of streets lined with well-preserved buildings dating from the Middle Ages and Elizabethan times. The town’s main castle is today protected by English Heritage.
