Introduction to Darlington - City Centre
In northeast England, between the Pennines and the North Sea coast, the pretty town of Darlington is found in the Tees Valley of southern County Durham. Best known as the location of the world's first railway, the town pioneered transportation development in the early 19th century. The Darlington Railway Centre and Museum (also called the Head of Steam) is found along the historic track outside Darlington city centre, exhibiting the world's earliest surviving steam engine to ever carry fare-paying passengers. A quaint railway cafe is open in the afternoon, making this a pleasant daytrip when staying in Darlington city centre hotels. The town centre itself has a historic market area, as well as Saint Cuthbert's Church. Built in 1183, this is one of northern England's most significant churches. A short work outside the centre is the buried medieval village of Ulnaby. From the Tees Valley, it's only a short distance to some of northern England's finest sites, including the Yorkshire Dales, Cleveland Hills and the North York Moors National Park.
