Introduction to Crewkerne, England
Set close to Somerset's Dorset border is the ancient town of Crewkerne, founded 899 AD during the reign of King Alfred the Great. Set 14kms from Yeovil on the A30 and the River Parrett, the town's main landmark is its unique 15th century parish church of St Bartholomew with its crenellated battlements and turrets. A base for the textile industry in the medieval era and the Middle Ages, Crewkerne lies in beautiful rolling countryside, close to several nature reserves, and boasts several English Heritage listed properties. Many of the town's old buildings, including Crewkerne hotels, especially those located around the market square and Market Street's Georgian streetscape, were constructed using the warm cream-coloured locally-quarried stone taken from Ham Hill, the site of a Roman hill fort. The local museum gives a fine overview of the history of the town and its most important heritage buildings. A comfortable drive away is legendary Glastonbury with its mysterious Tor and atmospheric ruined abbey, believed for centuries to contain the Holy Grail and to be the burial place of King Arthur. other spellings: crewkernehotels, crewkerm otel, crewkeren hotell, crewkenre hote, crewkrene hotle
