Introduction to Crediton, England
By far the most important attraction in the English town of Crediton, in Devon County, is the Church of the Holy Cross, which is still a significant place of worship and boasts Early English styling. The church, built by Lord Bishop of Crediton in the 1000s, was originally a cathedral. This town of about 7,000 people is finely nestled between two steep hills in the River Creedy's narrow vale. Crediton hotels bank on the area's old world charm and hospitality to attract their customers. So too do the town's also lovely and welcoming public houses. There is an old town in the east and a new town in the west. Southeast of town, magnificently situated on a ridge offering river vistas, is the great country house of Downes, built around the turn of the 17th century. On the northwest side of the town are the remnants of a defensive wall built in 1276.
