Introduction to Coventry - Brandon
A sporty little suburb in rural Warwickshire, Coventry's Brandon is situated just six miles west of the city centre. The main sites of tourist interest here are the Brandon Wood Golf Course, an 18-hole course bordered by a river, and the Brandon Stadium, which features motorcycle speedway and greyhound racing. Every year, the stadium hosts the Barandonapolis, in which the best of the world's speedway stars race in front of crowds that have exceeded 20,000 people in the past, or roughly 40 times the population of the entire village. The centre of the village is tiny, with a number of authentic old cottages and just one pub. The remains of Brandon Castle can be seen to the south in a field, but there is little to see apart from some masonry and mounds. Given the lack of Brandon hotels, a symptom of the small size of the village, many people stay in Wolston, a much larger town that is separated from the village by the River Avon.
