Introduction to Coventry - Allesley
The charming Olde English village of Allesley lies on the outer western edge of the conurbation of Coventry, set on the ancient coaching road between London and Birmingham. Determinedly retaining its village atmosphere and separate identity, its market square and village centre hold a number of half-timbered 17th century heritage buildings, including picturesque former coaching inns, cottages and several mansions. A notable example is the Stonehouse, dating from 1608, with its original frontage virtually unchanged. Allesely hotels come in the form of historic pubs with accommodation and modern facilities, serving local grub and beers. The typically English countryside around the village includes fields for the upkeep of horses, with horseback riding a popular activity here. The old centre of Coventry itself has many sites of architectural interest, although the city was badly damaged by WWII bombing.
