Introduction to Corbridge, England
Tucked away in the far northeast of England, Corbridge in Northumberland is set six kilometres east of Hexham and 26kms west of Newcastle. This was the northernmost town in the Roman Empire, and was the site of a Roman fort built about 85 AD. By the mid-100s, the fort had been replaced by a town built within military compounds. Of the Roman artefacts unearthed here, the best are the Corbridge Hoard of armour and the stone Corbridge Lion. Significant buildings in town are St Andrew's Church, which is believed to have been consecrated way back in 676 AD. It has been well maintained and regularly repaired through the centuries, and sports a fine Norman doorway plus a memorial for the soldiers who died during WWI. There are still three fortified vicarages in the county, one of which is in the town More than worth a look is Low Hall, which dates to the turn of the 14th century and has a nice pele tower. Comfortable Corbridge hotels are themselves full of history.other spellings: colbligehotels, corbridge otel, cobrege hotell, corblidge hote, colblege hotes, corbrig
