Introduction to Consett, England
The Durham county town of Consett has a history and economy firmly set in the iron and steel business. In 1841 there were only 140 people living in this community when coking coal and iron ore were discovered underground. The availability and abundance of these natural resources catapulted the village into a major industrial site with its blast furnaces churning out the much needed steel for the industrial revolution. Later, it provided the steel needed for the construction of the Blackpool Tower and even for Britain's nuclear submarines. Nowadays, however, the development of this northerly town has seen a softening in the previously strict industrial focus. There is a decent range of hotels in Consett which range from smart and sophisticated, to simplistic and budget. The Derwent River lends a more scenic aspect to the town and there are gentle flat walks along the old railway paths to Swalwell where there is a visitor's centre. The Allensford Country Park is a great place for a picnic and has a nature trail in Deneburn Wood, along with children's play area and views over the Derwent Valley.
