Introduction to Colne, England
The Lancashire town of Colne is set just off the M65 motorway, 25kms north of Manchester on the edge of the spectacular Pennine moors. Nearby are Bronte country and Howarth, Pendle Hill and the charming traditional Pennine villages of Barrowford, Foulridge and Laneshaw Bridge. Narrow moorland roads lead from Hebden Bridge, Hardcastle Crags and the Forest of Bowland to Colne, once a major trading centre for wool and later for cotton. The town still holds a few of the imposing old mills, now used for offices or converted into apartments. Mysterious Pennine legends are alive and well here, with Colne hotels at Halloween welcoming guests taking part in the traditional walk to Pendle Hill, home to the infamous Pendle Witches. Several old farmhouses in the area are reputed to be haunted and have been the subject of TV programmes. The town hosts the fascinating British in India Museum, and Wallace Hartley, the bandmaster of the ill-fated Titanic who kept playing while the ship went down, is commemorated and buried here. other spellings: clonehotels, otelin crone, colen hotell, coeln hote, coren hotes, coleign hotle, coreign
