Introduction to Coalville, England
The town of Coalville lies in northwest Leicestershire, close to the M1 motorway, on the A511 trunk road between Burton on Trent and the county town of Leicester. Once an historic market town set close to Charmwood Forest, as its name suggests, it was also known for its coal, mined here since medieval times. The early mines were open cast, with the deep mine shafts first dug in the late 18th century. Sribston Discovery Park, built on the site of a disused colliery, is a museum dedicated to the region's fascinating mining history as well as its railway history and the technology's effect on life in modern times. A few quaint streets with their original miners' cottages are still to be seen, although there are few other buildings of architectural interest in the town. Coalville hotels are useful for tourists heading to nearby East Midlands Airport for holiday flights and Donington-le-Heath Manor House Museum, set in a 700-year-old medieval mansion linked with the Gunpowder Plot.
