Introduction to Clevedon, England
The most famous icon of Clevedon in North Somerset has always been its pier; built and opened in 1869. With a great number of restorations over the decades, the old Victorian structure has been refurbished yet again and is now proudly inviting visitors to walk the wooden platform which juts out into the River Severn. Clevedon has developed as a commuter town for Bristol, but the pier has regularly held its own against the attractions of the local big city. The town is located right on the river, with gentle hills forming an undulating backdrop. For a short break or a day out this is a perfect retreat and there is a good selection of Clevedon hotels for visitors to choose from. Other attractions in the town include the nine-hole pitch and putt course, which is right on the river shores, and the excellent theatre in the town centre. But 'The Pier' with its current status as the only intact Grade 1 listed pier in the country will always be the main drawer of crowds.
