Introduction to Cleethorpes, England
The seaside English town of Cleethorpes was ostensibly established with the arrival of the Danes in the 6th century. In fact, the town’s name is thought to have derived from Nordic terms. From that point, it developed into a fishing village but in the 19th century, the town enjoyed vigorous expansion as an increasingly popular holiday and health resort, with many hotels in Cleethorpes springing up to service demand. In the late 18th century, rail links to industrial towns in the north of England drove a huge tourism boom. This town of northeast Lincolnshire is ideally placed for visitors to enjoy fresh sea air and seaside delights, as well as the various historic attractions in the town. A narrow-gauge steam railway along the riverfront is sure to delight children and adults alike. Modern attractions include Jungle Zoo and Pleasure Island, a busy and popular theme park while the beach is the focus of tourist attention during the summer months.
