Introduction to Cirencester, England
One of England’s great market towns, Cirencester is located in east Gloucestershire. Sitting just 150kms from London, the town is easy to reach. This is the biggest town in the Cotswold district, a region of great tourist importance, offering as it does a wealth of picturesque towns, beautiful countryside and rich history. Perhaps of most importance in the town is the Royal Agricultural College. Easily reached from hotels in Cirencester, this is the oldest agricultural college found anywhere in the English-speaking world and it has existed since 1840. The town’s history goes back to pre-Roman times. More recently, during the days of British industrial and economic power, the town was an important centre for wool and grain trading. Today, tourism is hugely important to the community. While visiting, tourists should be sure not to miss the Church of St John the Baptist, the landscaped gardens at Cirencester House, Abbey House, or the buried ruins of the Roman amphitheatre.
