The old spa town of Cheltenham is one of the most popular historic communities in countryside Britain. Since the restorative properties of the town's natural spring waters in the 18th century, it has enjoyed waves of tourism, initially from the well-heeled gentry of London and many regional market towns. Following a visit by King George III, the town's fame grew, and there was much development to support the many visitors. Though the town's spa industry has now faded into history, that history can easily be explored through the museums, buildings and other heritage sites in Cheltenham. Cheltenham hotels cater for a wide range of visitors, from back packing students to international visitors and group tours. A range of lodging is found around the town, with everything from famous branded chains along the busy local motorways to inns full of character at country clubs and villages. Thanks to excellent railway links, several motorways and some fine highways make it easy to visit London or get to the airport.
