Introduction to Canterbury - City Centre
With its iconic cathedral and historic, cobbled streets, Canterbury has long been a major tourism draw in the southeastern county of Kent, which is well situated close to London and the port of Dover on the English Channel. Aside from the celebrated cathedral, the scene of the murder of Thomas Becket in 1170 and the burial place of members of the royal family, Canterbury's city centre is immensely attractive, drawing in large numbers of domestic and foreign tourists alike each year. The long history of the town dates back millennia to Roman times and there is a well-organised museum dedicated to this era as well as a number of galleries and cultural centres that contribute to a wealth of things to see and do here, including the ever popular Canterbury Tales Visitor Attraction 'Medieval Misadventures'. Canterbury City Centre hotels are mostly situated just southwest of King's School, whose choir is celebrated in the UK for its performances at the nearby cathedral.
