Introduction to Buckfastleigh, England
Buckfastleigh is a heritage wool producing and market town on the southern perimeter of Dartmoor National Park, in Devon. It features 18th and 19th century buildings, many of which now house Buckfastleigh hotels. Chapel Street is in the centre of town and is the site of good shops, ambient pubs, Devon tea rooms and a good number of hotels in Buckfastleigh. Tourist draws in or near town include the Buckfastleigh Butterfly and Otter Sanctuary, Buckfast Abbey, and caverns such as Pridhamsleigh and Joint Mitnor. The latter boasts bison and hippopotamus remains. Taking a ride on the heritage steam pulled South Devon Railway from Buckfastleigh to nearby Totnes provides a wonderful experience with unrivalled scenic views. Despite the many attractions near town and the proximity of Torbay, a premier UK seaside location, many holidaymakers only visit Buckfastleigh hotels for the stark, but breathtaking, landscapes on Dartmoor. Hikers can traverse Dartmoor. Along the way are ancient memorials and stone formations.
