Introduction to Bromyard, England
The Herefordshire town of Bromyard lies close to the Worcestershire border on the A44, halfway between Worcester and Leominster. Once a centre for growing and marketing soft fruits and hops, the town boasts traditional half-timbered pubs, Bromyard hotels and a few buildings dating as far back as Norman times. Bromyard is well-known for its traditional English folk music festival, one of the biggest in the country, and for its Bromyard Gala country show and vintage traction engine rally held at its showground every July. These two events, as well as its July Festival of Performing Arts, attract thousands of visitors, giving a serious boost to the town. The most spectacular black and white half-timbered building in town is now a popular pub, and the parish church of St Peter's holds an effigy of the saint and parts of its structure date back 1,000 years. The town centre has many other heritage buildings of historic interest, and the National Trust moated farmhouse of Lower Brockhampton lies just outside the town. Bromyard Downs, common land to the northeast, has fine views over the Welsh border and its hills.
