Introduction to Brighton, England
The British beach town of Brighton began to boom after a doctor advocated using its seawater for medicinal purposes in 1750. Today, over eight million visitors come to this bohemian city 76kms south of London each year. The first of the many Brighton hotels opened in the early 19th century, and even though the Royal Pavilion is no longer an inn, this domed, Indian-influenced building and its surrounding gardens remain open to the public. A pebbly beach with pleasant waters stands between two piers. Although the long derelict West Pier recently burned down, many arcade attractions and fish and chip shops remain at the Palace Pier. There may be a pub on virtually every street corner here, but most of the city's alternative shops and vegetarian restaurants are located in the Lanes and North Laine areas. This city is also home of the world's oldest working aquarium and the world's oldest operating electric railway, which travels across the pier. Brighton's thriving gay community is centred in the Kemptown area.Visit our Brighton Travel Guide
