Introduction to Boston, England
With one of the tallest church towers in England, St Botolph's Church can be seen long before visitors arrive at the Lincolnshire town of Boston. This historic English town lends its name to the much more famous city in the New England region of the USA. Almost 60,000 people who call Boston home enjoy a town with a wonderful range of natural scenery, historic architecture, landmarks and regional attractions. The Stump, as the church is nicknamed, is thought to originate from the 7th century and is the country's largest parish church. The town's other centrepiece is the port, the historical importance of which is less evident today. Not only did the port support flourishing regional trade, but it is also the point from which a group of pilgrims departed to escape religious oppression. Some of these pilgrims eventually arrived in the New World aboard the Mayflower.
