Introduction to Blandford Forum, England
The pretty town of Blandford Forum in the southern English county of Dorset is well-known for being home to a wonderful range of Georgian architecture. The uncharacteristic but interesting profusion of this period style results from the town having burned to the ground in the late 18th century, following which it was rebuilt in the style of the period. The town's name refers to its historic importance as place of river crossings. Like many other important towns across the country, Blandford Forum was once home to a bustling market. Though the town was once an important stop along the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway, the closest point served by rail services today is Salisbury, some 23 miles to the northwest. From hotels in Blandford Forum, visitors can easily reach the seaside attractions around Poole and Bournemouth, the natural beauty of the New Forest, and the various delights of Devon and Cornwall.
