Introduction to Blanchland, England
The 'model village' of Blanchland is a picture of Pennine stone-built perfection, nestling between forested hills and open moorland on the Northumberland Border with County Durham. The entire village was formed using the stones of the derelict medieval abbey on the orders of Lord Crewe, the then Bishop of Durham. The famous Lord Crewe Arms Hotel, once a mansion, has a vast fireplace behind which Jacobite rebels hid during the 1715 uprising, and is reputed to be haunted. Many famous people have visited over the years, including WH Auden, Philip Larkin, Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears, and the unspoilt perfection of the village has featured in many period movies and TV dramas. The glorious countryside merges with the village to give a unique experience to those staying in Blanchland hotels, with the ancient Grade I listed 12th century Abbey Church all that remains of the vast monastery from which this unique village was born. other spellings: blanchlandhotels, otelin blamchland, blanchladn hotell, blanchlnad hote
