Introduction to Bexhill on Sea, England
The traditional Sussex seaside town of Bexhill on Sea, reputedly the haunt of smugglers in the early 19th century, has a long history dating back at least 1,200 years. Popular in the early 20th century as a quieter and more refined resort than its neighbour, Eastbourne, the town is known for the discovery here in 2009 of the world's oldest fossilised amber-encased spider's web, dating from 140 million years ago. The charming old town lies at the summit of the hill, with the southwest upscale district of Cooden home to attractive Bexhill on Sea hotels on the cliffs overlooking the beach. Set on the A259 coast road between Brighton and Folkestone, the town is a good base for exploring the Sussex coastline and the ancient Cinque Port towns of Kent as far as Canterbury, set a few miles inland and famous for its massive medieval cathedral. Brighton is just a short drive away, with its fabulous Royal Pavilion, Georgian buildings and somewhat alternative lifestyle.
