Introduction to Berkhamsted, England
The ancient Norman town of Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire is famous for the ruins of Berkhamsted Castle, from where William the Conqueror ascended the English throne after the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Nowadays, the town is home to the British Film Institute's National Archive, comprising records of a huge number of movie and TV archives in the world's largest facility of its kind. Berkhamsted became an important medieval city after its market charter was granted in 1217, with the ancient Saturday market still running. Work on the castle began in 1066, with its present day ruins just one of the town's many historic attractions. Edward Prince of Wales, known as the Black Prince, as well as later monarchs Henry III, Richard III and Edward II, spent much time here. Visitors staying in Berkhamsted hotels will enjoy the 13th century parish church and the oldest shop in Great Britain at 173 High Street, also dating from the 13th century and now occupied by an estate agency. A later architectural treasure is the protected Art Deco cinema, now listed by English Heritage. other spellings: berkhamstedhotels, berkhansted otel, berkhamsetd hotell, berkhamtsed hote
