Introduction to Berkeley, England
The Gloucestershire town of Berkeley lies in the Vale of Berkeley, between the M5 motorway and the banks of the River Severn. The town, set on a small hill, is famous for Berkeley Castle, the site of the imprisonment and murder of the medieval English king Edward II. The town's first mention in ancient records was in 870 AD, and it became an important canal port and market town in medieval times. In modern times, it was the site of one of the first UK nuclear power stations, now decommissioned and encased in concrete. The countryside of the west of England is some of the most beautiful in the country, with rolling hills, rivers and lush farmland. Berkeley hotels offer a great base for touring the region, being close to all major cities such as Bristol and Bath with their historic attractions. The town is also the centre for the famous Berkeley Hunt, one of the best-known in the UK. Hounds have been kept here since medieval times, with the hunt established in the late 17th century, other spellings: berkeleyhotels, otel in berkley, bekeley hotell, berkely hote, belkeley hotle, berkelie
