Introduction to Bedale, England
The pretty Yorkshire market town of Bedale has had quite a colourful history. Listed in the Domesday Book in 1086, the town has seen the hanging of marauders from Scotland, rule under the Richmond Bretons, anti-Tudor activity and the destruction of the town's fortress. Today, the town retains much of its historic interest. St Gregory's is a fine Gothic church with aspects of Catholic influence that were not completely erased during the English Civil War. The town has many other interesting buildings and architecture from Elizabethan and Georgian periods. Though the town's economy is historically founded in farming and a range of traditional trades, tourism plays an expanding role in the life of both Bedale and the region. Visitors who stay at hotels in Bedale can enjoy a truly unique historical experience (the little local museum is well worth visiting) amongst the cobbled local streets. Known as the Gateway to North Yorkshire, the town also offers excellent access to the county's many urban and rural charms.
