Introduction to Beaminster, England

Fans of English history are likely to have at least a passing knowledge of the striking town of Beaminster. But even for those who know little about this town, a holiday here tends to leave visitors with a deep appreciation for its local history. This quaint West Dorset town sits in a valley by the River Brit and can be easily accessed from major commercial centres such as Bristol, Bournemouth and Exeter. As such, Beaminster is an excellent base from which to embark upon an exploration of the Dorset countryside and coastline. The town's location and political position during the English Civil War made it a target of Royalist forces that sacked the community in 1644. The lack of any railroads consigned this town to remaining relatively small. Visitors arriving by road can stay at any of the many hotels in Beaminster while exploring attractions like Horn Park - a Grade II-listed neo-Georgian house - and its lovely gardens. Visitors also flock here annually for its large nine-day arts and music festival.
