Introduction to Battle, England
Battle, East Sussex, is a town close to the famous coastal town of Hastings, and is around 50 miles away from London. The famous Battle of Hastings took place in this historical town which is home to the castle-like Battle Abbey. Being a small town, there are few Battle hotels to choose from. The High Street offers charm and character, and most of the town’s tourist amenities including restaurants. Local landmarks include Battle Abbey, the railway station and the historically significant Telham Hill, which was an important site at the beginning of the Battle of Hastings, from which the town takes its name. The 11th century abbey is allegedly the location of Harold II’s death after his defeat by William the Conqueror. The gateway is the best preserved part of the structure and a major tourist attraction. Nearby natural areas of interest include Blackhorse Quarry, Darwell Wood and Hemingfold Meadow.
