Introduction to Barnoldswick, England
The picturesque moorland town of Barnoldswick lies in the Lancashire borough of Pendle, just to the south of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and Forest of Bowland area of outstanding natural beauty. Nestling on the lower slopes of the Pennines, the town lies on the watershed between the Aire and Ribble valleys, north of present day industrial Lancashire. First settled by Saxons, Barnoldswick is noted in the Domesday Book but remained a hamlet until the building of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, when it became a major cotton town. The older parts of the town are built entirely from grey Pennine granite, with rows of 18th century and earlier terraced weavers' cottages now modernised homes retaining their exterior charm. Several Barnoldswick hotels are also located in quaint heritage inns. The town has three conservation areas, with regeneration of heritage mills and other protected buildings a priority. Close by is Howarth, famous for the 19th century authors the Bronte sisters, with their home now a museum containing their authentic belongings, including the desks at which they wrote. other spellings: barnoldswickhotels, barmoldswick hote, barnoldswikc hotes, barnoldswcik hotle
