Introduction to Barnard Castle, England
Located in England's county Durham, the historic market town of Barnard Castle houses many restaurants, shops, pubs and accommodation options. The appealing town was named after the stone castle which was constructed in 1125 by the Normans. During the 12th century the castle experienced its heyday under Bernard de Bailliol. The castle's ruins can be found on Scar Top, from where visitors can enjoy stunning vistas of the Tees and its surroundings. Barnard Castle hotels as well as other lodging opportunities are widely available. Another must-see attraction here is the Market Cross, which is also known as 'Butter Mart'. Constructed in 1747 by Thomas Breaks, this octagonal structure has, throughout its history, had various functions. Housed in a French chateau-like, Renaissance style building, the four-storey Bowes Museum boasts more than 20 exhibition rooms displaying John and Josephine Bowes' extensive collection of art.
