Introduction to Bardsea, England
The charming little Cumbrian village of Bardsea lies on the northern edge of Morecombe Bay, close to the Lancashire border, and was mentioned in the 11th century Domesday Book. A fishing and farming community only accessed via Morecombe Bay's treacherous sands until the late 19th century, its manor house of Swarthmoor Hall has strong associations with the early Quaker movement in the late 17th century through its founder George Fox, husband of landowner Margaret Fell. For some years in the early 19th century, the village became an important port for the transportation of iron ore until it was superseded by the railway and the Ulverston canal. Visitors looking for peace and quiet plus a convenient location for exploring Cumbria can stay in the several Bardsea hotels, mainly located in old coaching inns. Nearby attractions include the mysterious prehistoric stone circle at Birkrigg, the former home of Lady Jane Grey at Sea Wood, Chapel Island in the bay and Conishead Priory, now the Manjusri Centre. Nearby Morecombe is a traditional north country seaside resort, with sandy beaches, pubs and fish and chip eateries. other spellings: bardseahotels, bradsea otel, bardsae hote, barsdea hotell, badrsea hotle, bradsea
