Introduction to Baldock, England
The historic market town of Baldock in North Hertfordshire lies at the source of the River Ivel, just 53kms north of London and 23kms from the county town of Hertford. Interestingly, the town was founded in the early 12th century by the Knights Templar after the First Crusade. The town's layout and central market square remain as they were when reconstructed in the 16th century, with a few buildings dating from 200 years earlier. Traditionally, the town was a major coaching staging post between London and England's northern towns, with present-day Baldock hotels set in ancient coaching inns. The town was known as a malting centre for several hundred years, with a number of brewers active in the area. History buffs will love this town for its medieval, Roman and even earlier history. Based on prehistoric and Iron Age remnants, some archaeologists believe Baldock may be the oldest settlement in the British Isles.
