Introduction to Bainton, England
The tiny hamlet of Bainton is simply a cluster of farms set in Stoke Lynne parish, around five kilometres north of the Oxfordshire town of Bicester. Recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086, the hamlet several hundred years later featured 17 households and by the 1950s, it held only a cottage and four farms. The surrounding agricultural land has been used for pasture for 300 years, with no need for many farm workers. Bainton Manor Farm's picturesque rubblestone house, constructed in the late 16th century as the manor house for the holding, is the hamlet's only landmark. Although there are no Bainton hotels, the adjoining historic market town of Bicester has a number of attractive places to stay, including friendly local pubs with their origins as quaint coaching inns. Access to the region is straightforward via the M40 motorway linking Birmingham and the north with London as well as by good road and rail links to Oxford and other towns in the region.
