Introduction to Aylmerton, England
The pretty north Norfolk village of Alymerton lies just over two kilometres from the North Sea coastline and is home to some 450 residents. Set just off the A148 road linking Kings Lynn with Cromer, the village is mentioned in the 1085 Domesday Book and holds the National Trust Felbrigg Estate, a 1,760 acre area of woodland and parkland. The estate's lake, formed in the 18th century by the damming of a local stream, is a popular recreation spot in summer. Many traditional rights of way through the Great Wood sheltering the estate give visitors and locals alike opportunities to enjoy relaxing walks. Alymerton holds a few interesting heritage buildings, the finest being the imposing 15th century parish church of St John the Baptist, set on a hill overlooking the village with its fine flint tower, believed to be 700 years old. Its interior boasts fine carvings, original stained glass and an iron-bound door. The village lies on the pilgrims' route to holy Walsingham, with the Stone Cross pointing the way. Aylmerton hotels and their ancient equivalents have been sheltering visitors to this remote part of Norfolk for hundreds of years. other spellings: aylmertonhotels, aylmreton hotell, aylmetron otel, alymerton hote, aymerton hotle
