Introduction to Axminster, England
The small Devon town of Axminster is credited with the invention of the special loom which made its extravagantly-patterned woollen carpets famous throughout the country. The charming town is set on a hill in east Devon, overlooking the River Axe, from which it takes its name. Celts and Romans both had a hand in the town's long history as a major West Country crossroads, with both the Fosse Way and the Dorchester-Exeter Roman road determining its development. Carpets made here in the 18th century were originally hand-tufted and extremely valuable. The town's pretty medieval stone-built church is well worth a visit, as is Axminster Museum for its displays of carpet history. Most Axminster hotels have good restaurants, with several other well-known eateries located in the picturesque town centre. The spectacular 12th century Forde Abbey is just across the Dorset border, as is Lambert's Castle, an ancient Iron Age hill fort. Backdown Hills and the East Devon reserve, two listed areas of outstanding natural beauty, lie close to Axminster, offering unrivalled walks with glorious views.
