Also known as Appleby-in-Westmorland, the charming Cumbrian town of Appleby Westmorland was renamed in 1974. The town boasts a long and rich history which can be seen in the large number of enchanting buildings, such as the commanding Norman castle which is open to visitors throughout the year. Another prominent landmark here is the gently flowing River Eden. One of the best times of year to visit Appleby Westmorland is during the Appleby Horse Fair in early June, which is a traditional event that was established to promote the area's many traditional charms. This is one of the oldest horse fairs to be held anywhere in the United Kingdom and is marked with a large number of events, while music lovers will also be interested in the Appleby Jazz Festival in late July.
