Introduction to Amesbury, England
Situated in the south of England, in Wiltshire County, Amesbury is perhaps most famous for its close proximity to the world-renowned historical site of Stonehenge. With a population of just under 9,000, this small town is charming in character and offers tourists plenty of historical and natural sites and attractions. Due to its location near one of the country’s most famous sites, Amesbury is visited by many tourists every year. They are pleased to find a good selection of Amesbury hotels upon arrival. The town can be accessed via the large A303 and the A345 roads and is just eight miles from Salisbury. The town’s abbey houses the grave of Eleanor of Provence, the one-time queen. Often overshadowed by its more famous, neighbouring attraction, Stonehenge, the Amesbury Archer is one of two interred aristocrats at the rich burial site dating to the Bronze Age that was discovered in the town in 2002.
