Introduction to Alton, England
Located in southern England, in Hampshire, Alton is a picturesque market town of approximately 17,000 inhabitants. It is within a stone’s throw of the coast, which makes it a perfect base for daytrips to surrounding towns and villages. The town’s fascinating history can be enjoyed through touring its many historical sites and attractions. Visitors to Alton are often impressed by its large selection of hotels in Alton, many of which can be found conveniently located near the A31 road. In addition, the town boasts nice restaurants and pubs. Great historical sites, including the Church of Saint Lawrence, are easily accessed from the town centre. The town is historically connected with Fanny Adams, a young girl who was murdered here in 1867 and whose name went on to be used as an expression meaning 'sweet nothing' for more then a century after her death. There is a good selection of shops and supermarkets in the town along with a local art gallery, two theatres and a museum tracing the area’s history.
