Introduction to Alfreton, England
The Derbyshire town of Alfreton lies in the Amber Valley at the junction of the A61 and A38 roads, close to the M1 motorway. Since the local pits of this a former mining town closed in the 1960s, its economy has focused on warehousing and light industry. The railway station provides daily peak-time routes to London's St Pancras Station as well as hourly services to Norwich, Liverpool, Leeds and Nottingham. The pretty market towns of Matlock and Chesterfield are nearby, as is the spectacular Derbyshire Peak District with its vast moorlands and famous stately homes of the English nobility. Alfreton hotels provide a good base for tourists exploring this traditional English region, with a few located in old coaching inns or traditional pubs. There isn't a great deal to see in the town itself, apart from the tiny one-person town jail, St Martin's Church and the market square containing the now-closed 18th century George Hotel, but there's enough of interest in the surrounding region to warrant a stay.
