Egypt Travel Guide - Introduction
With friendly locals, a well-developed tourist infrastructure and year-round good weather, it’s not difficult to see why Egypt is such as well-established holiday destination.
Cairo is the country’s capital and is a bustling city perhaps most famous for being the site of the Great Pyramids. This highly popular visitor destination offers a wealth of attractions including the fantastic Egyptian museum with its impressive 100,000 piece collection which includes King Tutankhamen's gold and lapis mask. A large selection of hotels and visitor amenities make for easy vacationing in the city.
Local cuisine is delightful and takes its influences from both Africa and Asia although many of the most popular dishes are Middle Eastern in origin. Stuffed vine leaves, humus, kebabs and roast pigeon are among the nationally popular creations and are invariably washed down with strong coffee known as kahwa or mint tea known as shay bil na'na'.
Safety concerns are minimal for visitors and although some terrorist activity has occurred (2005/2006), Egypt is still considered a relatively low-risk destination. Crime, in particular violent crime, is very rare as many of the locals are highly dependent on tourism and seek to make tourists as welcome as possible, else risk losing their livelihoods.
