The development of the city has done little to quell the enthusiasm of divers for the area, since the beautiful clear waters of the Red Sea are as inviting as they have ever been and still offer a fascinating selection of flora and fauna. The local diving scene is well geared to facilitate the needs of both novice and accomplished divers with local dive companies adequately qualified to supervise dives for a range of depths and abilities.
The beach is the ideal place to spend lazy days in the sun and indeed it would be easy to while away an entire vacation doing little else; however, for those visitors wanting a more varied selection of activity, the opportunity for daytrips in, around and beyond Hurghada can certainly assist in creating a more interesting agenda. Cairo and Luxor are both within visiting distance and easily accessible by plane, and even by road, although with significantly more travel time involved.
A vibrant evening entertainment scene is also one of the city’s chief draw cards and the large and varied selection of venues on offer confirms that Hurghada is Egypt’s ‘party central’. With everything from live music to karaoke to hip night clubs on offer, visitors of all backgrounds are able to find something to suit their tastes.
Alcohol is readily available in spite of an overwhelmingly Muslim population and, aside from during the Ramadan festival, there are few restrictions on sale or consumption where visitors are concerned.
Hurghada can be reached relatively easily with a flight to Cairo and a domestic transfer posing the most obvious choice for the majority of international visitors. From within the country, the city can also be reached by bus or train, although both are fairly time-consuming options. Driving is a possibility but not recommended on account of the fairly reckless conditions.
