Cairo Travel Guide
Baladi bars are the first port of call for many wanting to enjoy an alcoholic drink and are essentially cafe style venues appearing to sell coffee and tea only but quite obviously serving alcohol if you venture in far enough. These kinds of bars, while perfectly safe, tend to be fairly male dominated so female tourists might feel a little uncomfortable if they frequent them without male partners.
Visitors looking for action beyond the bars should be aware that what is called a nightclub in Cairo is not a place to go to dance but rather a venue at which one sits down a watches a show while drinking (or eating). This kind of establishment varies greatly in its style and quality with no shortage of downmarket, seedy places as well as quality joints in the big hotels.
