Taba is Egypt’s closest border crossing with Israel. Taba hotels are often high-rise, high security establishments and offer all the five-star luxury that such hotels invariably provide. This isn’t the rule with Taba hotels, however, as there are plenty of more modest, traditional accommodations that are often family run and cosy. In fact, the southern district of Beer Sweer specialises in Taba hotels that run from beach front bungalow operations with thatched roofs to hammocks slung between trees and these are popular with backpackers. Slightly more up-market concrete establishments with basic single rooms and standard facilities such as ceiling fans can also be found. Camping on the beach is permitted, encouraged even, with lots of travellers taking up this roughing-it but fun option. Regardless of where you stay, you won’t be far from Castle Zaman, the town’s primary tourist attraction, a towering monument that offers views to four countries from its top floor observation deck.
