Introduction to Luxor - City Centre
The ancient city of Luxor is one of Egypt’s prime tourist destinations. Due to its numerous ancient monuments, temples and statues, it is often referred to as the world’s finest open-air museum. Visitors to the city who choose hotels in Luxor city centre as their base are within walking distance of Karnak and Luxor Temples. A horse and carriage, known as a caleche, is a novel way to enjoy a sightseeing tour. The city centre gas a railway station, on the Cairo-to-Aswan mainline, and a ferry service across the River Nile to the West Bank. Ferries leave from the jetty near to Luxor Temple’s iconic columns and lofty statues. A few kilometres from the disembarkation point for the ferries is the Valley of the Kings, home to the fabled tomb of Tutankhamun, and the Valley of the Queens. Accommodation in the city centre ranges from basic traveller hostels right through to luxury five-star establishments housed in what appear to be old colonial palaces.Visit our Luxor Travel Guide
