Introduction to Cairo, Egypt
The gateway to the glories of Ancient Egypt, one of the most important early civilisations the world has known, is Egypt's modern capital, Cairo. Set on the magnificent River Nile, its connections with its ancient past draws millions of tourists year round. The city is home to a spectacular medieval Islamic quarter as well as important Coptic sites in its Old Quarter. However, the main attractions here are the Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Saqqara Pyramid Complex, the latter containing Egypt's first step pyramid, built in the 3rd dynasty for Pharaoh Djoser. Many Cairo hotels lie in the downtown Midan Tahir district, built in the 19th century as a 'Paris on the Nile' and full of imposing buildings and vibrant street life. The main souk, Khan el Khalili, is set in the Islamic Cairo district along with the Citadel, famous mosques, traditional Turkish baths and medieval buildings. Fustat district, south of the city centre, is the heart of historic Cairo. A must-see is the premier collection of ancient Egyptian artefacts on the planet, housed in the Egyptian Museum.Visit our Cairo Travel Guide
