Introduction to Cairo - Heliopolis
Heliopolis is one of Cairo's most affluent districts. There's little to attract visiting tourists, but Heliopolis hotels offer easy access to and from the airport. Travellers can get here by taking a taxi from the airport, or one of the older trams from Ramses Station, in central Cairo. Most of the hotels here cater to overnight travellers with early flights, or those arriving late at night. Room rates tend to be on the high side. Visitors who spend a little longer in Heliopolis can enjoy the architecture in the Korba, the oldest part of the district. Attractions here include the Baron Empain Palace and the Basilica of Notre Dame. The best time to visit is springtime, when the Korba Street Festival takes place. This festival, on Baghdad Street, offers visitors the chance to see a variety of Egyptian street entertainers.
