Introduction to Cairo - Abdeen
Abdeen is a district of Old Cairo best known for the elegant Abdeen Palace, which is now in part a museum, while other parts of the sprawling complex are used as the residence and workplace of the country's president. The palace is found on Qasr el-Nil Street in eastern Cairo. With the all the exquisite paintings and adornments, not to mention dozens of gold-covered clocks, this is one of the world's most sumptuous palaces. It was constructed between 1863 and 1874. A fabulous garden was created here in 1921. The palace's higher stories are used for greeting foreign dignitaries. Greater Abdeen is a part of Cairo's lively downtown. On the lower floors of the palace are the Arms Museum, the Royal Family Museum and Presidential Gifts Museum and the Silver Museum. The Historical Documents Museum opened in 2005. It holds the Imperial Ottoman decree that established the rule of Muhammad Ali. Abdeen hotels are within easy walking distance to the museum complex, the district's only major attraction.Visit our Cairo Travel Guide
