Introduction to Aswan, Egypt
Ancient Egypt's gateway to Africa, Aswan, is the southernmost of the modern country's three tourism hubs for its location on the River Nile and its laid-back, relaxing atmosphere. Its ancient granite quarries, a major visitor draw, provided the massive obelisks for which Luxor is famous. Scattered around the city, its surrounding countryside and its river islands are ancient temples, tombs and ruined palaces dating through the dynasties of the Old Kingdom to the Roman era. On the islands are traditional Nubian villages and fabulous Abu Simbel is a short drive away. The UNESCO-listed Philae Temple dates from 690 BC, and together with other important monuments, it was moved to its present location due to the construction of the Aswan High Dam. Aswan hotels overlooking the River Nile to the hills beyond are favourites with visitors for their spectacular sunset views, with several set on the river islands and onshore close to the magnificent ruins of the ancient civilisation.
