Introduction to Alexandria - El Montaza
El Montaza, which is Arabic for 'The Park', is the name for a district as well as a park in Alexandria, Egypt. The area's claim to fame is the resplendent Montaza Palace complex in the royal gardens of Al-Montaza. Constructed on a low plateau to the east of central Alexandria, the palace offers a great vista of a beach and the Mediterranean Sea. The area was first developed in 1892 when Salamlek Palace was built on the command of Khedive Abbas II. The area was further developed into a summer palace in 1932 by King Fuad I. Within the complex is Haramlik-Montaza Palace, which is now a museum full of objets d'art. Montaza Park was once the pleasure grounds of Egyptian kings and today is a sprawling 150 acres of park and forest. Tourists can bring the greenery of Alexandria into their vacation by staying in El Montaza hotels. El Montaza also has a nice old clock tower.Visit our Alexandria Travel Guide
