Egypt's largest stadium and Alexandria's newest airport are among the modern attractions in the newest region of Egypt's ancient 'Pearl of the Mediterranean'. Many guests at Borg El Arab hotels are passengers who land in the city at the airport of the same name, 45kms southwest of the city centre. The endangered ruins of the ancient monastery complex and city of Abu Mena lie immediately south of this modern airport. Each year, thousands of pilgrims flock to another nearby religious site, the Coptic St Mina monastery. This sprawling Western Desert monastery was built to replace Abu Mena after its destruction during the middle of the 7th century. Johannesburg's Soccer City is the only stadium in Africa larger than the 86,000 seat Egyptian Army Stadium. Four large floodlights illuminate both this massive stadium, which sits 10kms from the airport, and the running track encircling its pitch.
